The presence of highly invasive and destructive tephritid fruit flies such as the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) continues to threaten the commercial fresh fruit industry arising from higher production costs in controlling those pests and quarantine restrictions especially in the subtropical and tropical regions of the world. In managing those tephritid pests, the threat of multiple species’ invasion underpins the need for building an effective collaborative network amongst agricultural action and research agencies in identifying and halting the spread of those pests.
Therefore, during the 9th International Symposium on Fruit Flies of Economic Importance (ISFFEI) that was held in Bangkok, 2014, the Tephritid Workers of Asia, Australia and Oceania (TAAO) network was revitalized following increasing interest in fostering similar closer networking amongst tephritid researchers and pest control officers in Asia and the Pacific, particularly when this region contains a considerable proportion of the global tephritid workers’ community and is host to a significant number of the world’s most invasive fruit fly species.
The TAAO was established as an independent professional and scientific organization with the purpose of bringing together tephritid workers from Asia, Australia, and Oceania.
Thus, in efforts to raise the profile of TAAO, we are happy to announce the First Symposium of TAAO that will be held from August 15-18 this year in Malaysia. Jointly organized by Universiti Putra Malaysia (through the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Agriculture) and TAAO in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, this marks a new phase in TAAO towards increasing regional involvement and participation in the study and management of fruit flies throughout this region. This inaugural symposium will consists of 10 exciting sessions ranging from the management to biology of the tephritids to held over four full days.
On behalf of the organizing committee, we warmly welcome you to Malaysia to participate in this important gathering of fruit fly workers.
“Selamat datang ke Malaysia!”
